We’ve all seen the beautiful art across various Final Fantasies from Amano, which started all the way back with the first game. BattleCat is said to be a new first-person shooter that combines elements of Splinter Cell, The Division, and Ghost Recon. Twitter user Zer0Bytes published a selection of images showing off the new, unannounced game over the weekend, though Ubisoft has moved quickly and managed to take down the images since. The images appear to show an internal document – seemingly meant for internal use – that describes a game called ‘BattleCat’, a first-person shooter set in the Tom Clancy universe that’s reportedly targeting consoles and PC (thanks, VGC)....

News of the delay comes shortly after word got out that the full game would be delayed to November, echoing a previous report from Henderson suggesting the new November date. Developer DICE would later confirm the delay, citing “unforeseen challenges” in navigating game development during a pandemic. “With the ongoing conditions not allowing that to happen safely, and with all the hard work the teams are doing from home, we feel it is important to take the extra time to deliver on the vision of Battlefield 2042 for our players....

Setting aside all the technical problems, Battlefield 2042 was actually fairly popular at release, reaching the top five most actively played games on Steam, and similar lists on Xbox Live. Today, less than two weeks on from launch, the game has lost over 60% of its active players on Steam. As seen on Steam DB, Battlefield’s peak concurrent player count over the last 24 hours was 34,005, down from its 105,397 peak on launch day....

This has, as it tends to do, unfortunately also extended to DICE developers. Since Battlefield 2042’s launch in November, some of those who worked on the game have been bombarded with insults and the usual package of abuse on social media. Their Tweets would turn into memes on the game’s biggest subreddit. The third entry in the action series was revealed back at The Game Awards in 2017, and we basically didn’t hear much about it for a number of years after. According to games journalist Imran Khan, as shared on his Patreon, that’s because the game was planned to be semi-open world, something that would have been quite the change from the previous entries in the series. Explaining the various reasons as to why the game took so long, Khan wrote, “The answers are mostly not shocking — it was announced very early, there was a pandemic that really slowed things down, the initial director left fairly early on in the project, etc....

In a blog post on the official website, the game’s executive producer Jared Neuss acknowledged the change to a free-to-play model “has been a big shift,” with the new business model and new systems for unlocking heroes and getting new skins. Activision Blizzard, as you’re probably aware, is currently engaged with a series of lawsuits related to the company’s alleged “frat boy culture” and various harassment claims. The state of California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing has filed an objection to the settlement the company reached with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, claiming it would cause “irreparable harm” to its own lawsuit. In documents that were circulated on Twitter by Axios’ Stephen Totilo, the DFEH notes that the terms of the settlement would require employees to release Activision Blizzard from claims under California state law – which would have serious repercussions on its own lawsuit....
